We communicate in different ways and for different reasons. At work or in your personal life, it is your skill at getting your opinion or thoughts across, which bridges the gap that lies between people. With state of the art innovation in technology, the world has shrunk to size tiny but even then to pursue a job or relationship it is still your basic skill at communicating that can help you take things to the next level. In a competitive work environment you cannot afford to feel shy, as most employers look for candidates with well-honed communication skills. Here are some basic ways for you to improve your communication skills.

Verbal Communication
Lucidly conveying information, expressing your opinion or thoughts clearly is required to work in any organisation. Being coherent depends on your comfort level too, how comfortable you are in a particular situation can be clearly understood by the way you respond. Being self-conscious is one of the main reasons why people falter. A good communicator never loses his/her cool irrespective of the number of people he/she is speaking to. Fortunately or unfortunately you are not alone in this situation. There are millions of people who face the same problem as you do, but the good thing is that nowadays there are also millions of ways to overcome this drawback. Language and soft skills training are being given at numerous training centers. You can also consider joining an acting school, if fear of facing people is the problem you face. Speaking skills are equally important when you're talking to one person as well as when addressing one hundred, so if you're not sure where you stand, then just ask a friend or trusted colleague to pinpoint your mistakes and give you their feedback because it is always better to have your difficulty objectively assessed before you take any necessary steps.

Written Communication
Being grammatically correct, especially in your written communication, is a basic requisite for any job. Understanding the basics of grammar is very important to improve your style of writing. Nowadays there are many institutions that offer courses to work on grammar, business or creative writing. You can join one of them or try to learn it yourself from high school textbooks. This is the best possible way to learn the basics, as the average high school curriculum is relatively simple and easy to understand.

However, having a coach can make a world of difference, so if you know someone who is an excellent writer then ask him or her to review something written by you and may be even rewrite it together. This will help you build effective writing skills and also quicken your progress. Online coaching is available for those who would like to be tutored at their convenience. So use keywords such as 'distance learning', 'learn to write', and' online writing courses' to find a course that matches your requirement.

Listening
To succeed at work it is important to be able to listen carefully and understand when someone is speaking. Sharp listening skills are crucial in today's work environment as we interact with so many different people in a workplace. One way of improving this will be to focus your attention on the speaker and making a note of what is being said. If you are not very good at grasping as someone is talking, then you can buy some listening comprehension cassettes that are available in the market. These tapes will have a short story or article on any topic, after listening to which you will be asked a set of questions to answer. These activities will help you grasp what is being said without the help of an actual person speaking to you.

Voicing Your Opinion or Analysis
There are times when you will be asked to share your opinion or explain something relating to your work. It can even be a situation where you might have to defend your actions in a cool, collected way. So are you sure you are prepared to face your seniors at work? If you're unsure then start working on these skills by listening to talk shows. A talk show usually revolves around a controversial subject, so you will get to listen to different people sharing or defending their views. Sometimes this might even compel you to call in and share your opinion on things you might or might not believe in. This is a good way to learn because, as humans we articulate better when we feel strongly about something,. You can also find a mentor with whom you can role-play or have a debate and ask for candid feedback. Pick a topic that's close to your heart because most of the times at work, you'll be asked to express your views about something you are doing., something close to you; so practicing this will help you relax and share your experience in a composed manner.

The key to all forms of communication is your confidence. Every time you are asked to give your view about something, it is usually something that you do, so you are the expert at it, then why should you not sound and feel confident? What and how you communicate is a reflection of yourself, as in your professionalism, character and your awareness of things, so being prepared and working on developing your communication skills will only help you in the long run and never leave you feeling at a loss for words.
