What should your resume include?

  • Offering what's in demand

What you offer employers could include anything, be it qualifications, experience or expertise. But different employers look for varied combination of these things. So make sure you trim your resume to suit the requirements of the job you're hoping to land.
  • Cut-out the clutter

If your resume has too many pages, chances for the most relevant details to be missed is quite high. As you move ahead, it is not necessary to include temporary positions or internship experience from the past, unless you want to highlight certain experience you had gained or a present job might require knowledge in that particular domain.
  • Highlight Appropriately

A job ad should give you a fair idea of what an employer would look for in a prospect. So tailor you resume to highlight the necessary details and make sure your corresponding skills or experience feature prominently in your resume.
  • Build Brand You

You are the brand your resume strives to sell. So wherever possible, include details of past achievements and accomplishments to make sure a prospective employer picks you when they look at other equally qualified candidates.
  • Keep an eye on the length

No recruiter likes to read verbose, lengthy career histories. If you think you have too many details to add, try merging them under relevant headings. Accomplishments and experience would be the first thing an employer would look at. So make sure you add the necessary details and cut out the rest.
  • Remove personal details

Religion, marital status, school grades have no place in a resume. Including them will only make it long and amateurish. Your experience and skills are what an employer wants to know about not the subjects that you excelled at in school.
  • Eliminate negative information

Your bad experience at a previous position or employer has no business to be mentioned in your resume. Remember that anything that you mention in your resume is bound to be discussed and dissected at an interview, so make sure you leave out those detail. This also includes you reasons for leaving a previous job, for whatever reasons it might be, health or otherwise!
