Job search mistakes that can cost you opportunities

  • Frequent happy-hours

The times when you seem to be making progress is not the time for a siesta. Take to many breaks and you sure will lose track sooner than you think.
  • Spending too little time

Finding a job never happens in minutes. It is a reasonably long process that would require you spending quality time. If you do not think that would be possible, then you cannot really get any closer to the job you want.
  • Putting your all in one

Depending on just one strategy to pay off has never really worked for anyone. It is necessary to diversify and stop putting all your eggs in one basket if you really want to land the right job sooner.
  • Letting failure pull you down

Not all success stories happen in just a day of trial. Everything takes time and it would pay to remember that when something fails to work. Never give up easily or let frustrations bog you down. You fail, it's alright, just bounce back and look further on and keep moving ahead.
  • Getting distracted by chores

Everyone has errands to run and household chores to finish. You sure would have them too, but that should never induce you to finish up chores during the time you've allot to look for jobs. There is always a way around everything; just find it.
  • Overlooking resume reviews & updates

You know what you're capable of, but a prospective employer doesn't. Thus getting your resume reviewed will help you understand if you're projecting yourself right. So make sure that you have someone read through it every once in a while. Also when you do it, ensure it is always current and not an outdated version of your expertise and experience. And when you're refurbishing it don't forget to sprinkle in a generous dose of relevant keywords
  • Stepping in without a plan

Never make unplanned moves when it comes to finding the right job. At the same time never go in with expectations that are too broad or too specific. Look at the options, carefully decide on what will work for you and then plunge in.
  • Cutting-off ties

Your family and friends are your support system. Never lose touch with them as that will drain you emotionally and psychologically. Don't swing between extremes. Breaks are a necessity, so make sure you indulge in socialising too. Moreover, you never know who you might meet when you're out; after all networking has always been a key job search strategy.
