  • Begin The Talk

Share the basic ideas which are truly realistic to your boss. Don't try creating sympathy by speaking about your personal problems. It spoils your image. Talk about your experience and ability doing the work and draw attention to your accomplishments.
  • Maintain The Dialogue

Be attentive and listen to what your boss has to say. Honestly understand his views. You are not required to answer a specific question directly unless the answer helps your position. Don't interrupt while he is speaking wait for him to complete.
  • Have a Proactive Plan Ready

It is not an easy deal that you ask for it and get it . Keep in mind just like you the boss is ready to tell his views and ideas too. Have a backup plan ready to convince him to saying yes.
  • Be Honest

Convincing your boss to say yes means, you understand the role and fairness in the process. Be true and never lie during the negotiations. If you're caught lying your boss is going to lose belief and respect for you. This would turn out to be a major disadvantage and affect your growth in the organisation.
  • Understand Your Problems

Part of the preparation process lies in understanding your problematic areas. Be ready to address those issues when they arise during the negotiation process. Take time to think on it or you will get stuck during the negotiation.
  • Be Focused and Mindful

Focus on your goals all through the conversation to make your boss feel that he is not a loser in the negotiation. Moreover this will also help you gain good control over the negotiation. Be mindful of when to stop the negotiation as well. Otherwise you will do immeasurable harm to your career.
  • Avoid Force, Conditions, Threats

Forcing may lead to fissures in your work relationship. Never threaten, demand by force or conditions. Remember its an on-going relationship. Negotiations can have varying impact on your future with the orgnisation, so plan your move accordingly.
  • Be Clear on Your benefits

Once your boss decides that you are eligible for the package be ready to speak on greater responsibilities, a quicker promotion, bonus, time flexibility and commissions. When the discussion is moving favourably it surely is the right time to tell him what you want.
  • Not The End of Everything

Now that the negotiation is over, learn from the experience. This will not only improve your ability on salary negotiation but your job as well, since there will always be opportunities to negotiate as time goes by. If you're happy in your job and the only thing you can't get is salary hike think twice before you quit.
