Did you know that depression saps energy? And did you also know that you can never really make the right decision when you're angry or upset? Well, we've all heard a lot about the ill-effects of anger and depression. But how many of us really pay attention and try to overcome or prevent the harmful results?

Everyday we experience a whole gamut of emotions that sets in motion a chain of events, which can have varying effects on our physical and psychological health. However how often do we really sit back and try to control what happens? This is true especially at work, where we're faced with situations that expect us to react in multiple ways. And most often we're too angry, too depressed or too tired to actually take the right decision or come up with the right solution.

Working can be highly-stressful, but predominantly it is our reactions, routines, physical activities and even sleeping and eating habits that add to the stress. Most people will wonder how this is possible, but have you ever tried concentrating hard after a late night? Or tried tackling a criticality on an empty stomach? Your work certainly deserves your undue attention. Not only because it is your means for survival but also because it is helps you evolve and grow as a person.

The key to a more focused work-life certainly depends on your health, since only when you have enough energy will you be able to deal with disruptions and celebrations alike with poise. So how do you think you can break-away from the constant distractions that can curtail your growth and also divert your attention from priorities at work? And how can you go about chasing the silver lining and focusing your vision and see what's right in front of your eyes?

Reacting appropriately and being on your toes at all times just requires practice and if you're truly willing to go that extra mile to keep your emotions in check, it wouldn't be long before you have a ball, working and pursuing your career goals. Given below are a few resolutions that you should make, to ensure that you become emotionally and mentally healthy.

Resolution 1: Stop gathering wool
Dreaming away your day, staring into space can be quiet refreshing, but have you ever realised you're actually wasting precious time doing that? Yes, there are days when you'll find it almost impossible to even shake yourself free of the cobwebs that make it difficult to pay attention. However if you make it a habit to shut your mind off from the tasks in hand and move away to fairyland everyday, you can be sure of losing your job. But most importantly it's not just your job that you will be losing, becoming mentally lethargic can have very harmful side-effects. It dulls your reflexes and feeds on your enthusiasm, which can dampen even your life outside the office. Remember the more you work your brains and get things done the more value you add to yourself and your life. So when you see yourself falling into a lethargic routine, take the initiative to try out something new. You can even ask and take-up more responsibilities, which will make sure you're too busy to dream your day away.

Resolution 2: Stay positive come what may
It is easy to let your spirits soar when things are going your way and understandably it can be quite difficult to be upbeat when nothing seems to work in your favour. But feeling down and dejected has never helped anyone's cause. A challenging career is no excuse for not staying positive. If you're going to let minor setbacks ruin your day, you can take it for granted that in the long run your attitude can be destructive to your physical and mental well-being. Most often we fail to notice the fact that a positive outlook always helps find solutions to problems faster than we realise. Every time when things go wrong our judgment is so clouded by self-pity and our own frustrations that we never really notice when solutions can be found right under our very nose. And if you're looking at staying healthy it would certainly be necessary to start being happy or at least positive at all times. And no matter what happens make it your agenda to not let hindrances jeopardise your health.

Resolution 3: Stop being angry indefinitely
Feeling angry is quite normal but holding on to it is not. A common emotion when situations or people go wrong, anger feeds on your energy and clouds your vision very easily. A negative emotion that saps energy, anger festers below the surface making it impossible to move on. But like everything else in life there is a solution to anger too. It is obviously impossible to stop feeling angry but it's not impossible to let go of anger. And every time you get angry make sure that you do not stay that way for long. After all there's too much to life to keep holding grudges forever.

Resolution 4: Get out of the blame game
"He did it"! "I was not told anything, why don't you ask her, it's her domain"? Well, all this and more is said everyday. Blaming somebody else for what happens is the easiest way out of any situation. However when you blame others and unload your responsibilities onto someone else's shoulders you in fact lose the opportunity to learn how to rectify that error. Most often people do not realise this simple fact, but it is essentially true that when you take up responsibility for something, even a minor mishap you also get the chance to rectify, which has a lot to teach too. So the next time something goes wrong own up for your mistake and learn from the process and simply spare yourself the additional guilt that come from passing around the blame.

Resolution 5: Let go of pointless beliefs and start believing in yourself
If you truly believe that you can change and improve your life, you will be surprised to know that it will actually happen. "Believe in yourself" is so often quoted that we mostly tend to overlook that it in reality can actually make a world of difference to the way we work and live. Anytime you feel down try getting out by believing that you can rectify the situation and see for yourself how much more positive it makes you feel. Believing in your capabilities gives you the confidence to scale greater heights but at the same time just holding on to beliefs can no longer help you move ahead. You could have believed in something years back but as times go by you would have moved on from it. But the resulting conflict of saying that you still believe in those ideals but not really feeling that way can hold you back too. When you know for a fact that you've moved on from something, simply let go, do not be bothered by what people might think or say. Because at the end of the day carrying extra baggage around will only impede your progress significantly

Resolution 6: Set your priorities to pick out what's best for you
We make a lot of choices everyday but how can you be sure that what you picked is the best one for you? When you know what your priorities are it wouldn't be difficult to make a choice and pursuing something that is good for you. If you choose to skip lunch today, you know why you're doing it and will obviously know how to compensate and not feel drained for the rest of the day. As you learn to do the things that are right for you, you also learn the nuances of making the right choice. So trust your judgment and weigh your options carefully to begin a more insightful and satisfied new beginning.

Resolution 7: Embrace change
Change is inevitable. But sometimes it is necessary for you to make a change for a more satisfied existence. Spending hours everyday dreaming of finding a job that would challenge your potentials can never take you anywhere. Contrary to opinion, the satisfaction from beating the odds successfully at work can be more exhilarating than draining. However if your job drains you of energy and makes you feel down and depressed it is a sure sign that you need a change. Doing what you love should only be making you feel happy not exhausted. And if that has become a routine, you certainly don't need a career counselor to tell you that you're in the wrong job. When you know you can't take anymore, it is up to you to bring about the change that your career and life deserves. After all there's only one life, why waste it holding on to things, especially a job that's not right for? There are definitely thousands of jobs out there for you to pick and choose from. Just make the decision to change and you'll be surprised to find the opportunities that would come looking for you.
