Dressing up for a job interview

  • Clean-up

Your clothes don't have to be new but they better be clean! Most of the time people pick up clothes that they are comfortable in, which certainly is the right thing to do, but if that's something you'd worn the day before it's an absolute no-no for your interview. And while talking about clothes, make sure the rest of you is clean too. Just remember that when you're clean and tidy, you're bound to feel fresh and brisk to face the world, in this case your interviewer.
  • Dress conservatively

Though suits and ties are not expected make sure you wear a nice formal outfit, complete with the right shoes, belt and socks. As for the women as there is no set professional uniform, pick clothes that is conservative and that doesn't seem too loud, and most importantly not something too revealing.
  • Goody two-shoes

Again men are saved in this front; the right pair of shoes should do the trick. Women with the hundreds of choices that they are offered can find it a tad difficult to pick the right pair. One thing is for sure, stay clear of the flip-flops; they're perfect only for the beach. Though closed toe-shoes are considered appropriate, if you don't have a pair at least wear one that is not too flashy and grabs too much of attention.
  • Accessorise in moderation

Keep the glittering, chunky jewellery at bay. You definitely don't want your prospective employer thinking you're a walking accessories store. Keep it simple, minimal and classy. No drop earrings or necklace, at least during the initial hiring processes. Wear a simple stud, some bangles if the want to but nothing over the top, dressy.
  • Colouring it right

Colours have a lot of impact on the mood of a person, so when you're at an interview you definitely would not want to induce the wrong reactions. Pick colours that will ensure you're taken seriously. That doesn't necessarily mean black, you can try blues, the navy ones or even greens, the fuchsias and wine red can be reserved for the weekends.
  • Paint them right

If you have long nails paint them in nude shades so that they don't grab too much of attention. Red, blues and yellows can be reserved for party nights. If you prefer not to polish your nails but like keeping them long, make sure they're squeaky clean and well filed, you don't want to leave marks on your interviewer's hands when you shake them, do you? As for men, crop those talons, they're just too unmanly.
  • Bag them simple

Your resume and other documents do need a case to carry them around in, so make sure your folder is intact and appropriately covers your documents, without having them hanging out or folding them at the ends. As for the bag, a sleek case should make you look suave and professional. Don't ever carry these over-sized wonders that seem to accommodate a whole wardrobe inside them.
