Is it time for you to move up the career ladder?by Vishnupreetham
How happy are you at work? Really happy and inspired? If you're not sure then it's time you look for avenues to move up. When you've been a part of an organisation for an extended period of time, it's natural to start feeling less inspired by job responsibilities or frustrated when your peers seem to be climbing up the career ladder faster than you are. But how often have you attributed this feeling to a need to climb up the ladder yourself?Well, if you're still not sure whether it's time to move up, then here are additional reasons why you should pay attention to your instincts. Being stereotyped Let's assume that you're a stock market analyst. You're keen discerning capacity helps you to instantly notice fluctuations and your team relies on your input. But what if you have other talents that are being overlooked? When you feel that you're being pigeonholed and you're not being recognised for your other talents, then it's time you start looking for chances to do something different, probably on a higher rung of the ladder. You're multitasking Being assigned multiple tasks does not necessarily mean that you've moved up. When you can do multiple jobs successfully it also means that you have the capacity to get it done too. So try and find out if your skills will be needed at a higher level. You're free most of the time All of us hope to have some free time at work but what if you're idle all the time? This could be misunderstood as laziness. Yes, you could be finishing work faster than your peers or you could be adept at what you do and have figured out ways to complete tasks in less time. Whatever the reason this is a sign that the upper management will have to find a way to use your skills more wisely. You've upgraded your qualification Doing multiple courses after work or over the weekend can help you upgrade your position. Add your advanced degree or course with your work experience and you sure have a valid reason to make a change. You're looking to quit Usually people decide to quit when there is a lack of opportunities for growth within the organisation. However, unless the work atmosphere is unbearable it is a foolish move to make because when you decide to leave, there are very little chances for you to be rehired by the same organisation again. So, until you're absolutely sure that there are no attractive options available, don't even think of moving out. You're becoming temperamental Work can sometimes make you feel like you're stuck in a rut and this can at times leave you feeling frustrated. Everyone goes through this phase but when you don't seem to be getting out of it then it is obvious that you need a change. Consistent dissatisfaction could be because of numerous reasons, the chief being everyone's tendency to outgrow jobs or positions. If you think jobs higher up are more interesting then figure out how you can get there. Having peers in higher management Yes, some people move up faster than others. They might be quicker at grasping, and accepting this can be painful for you but this should in no way stop you from trying to catch up. When you know that you have an equal breadth of experience and skills as your peers, it is just a matter of time before you reach where they are. You're extremely good at what you do When you're looked up to in your team and considered a model employee in your group, it's your chance to go up to your department head with the necessary proof. If your talents are visibly acknowledged in the group it is time you get kicked to a higher level. If all these reasons are not good enough then it time you do some serious changes in the way you go about with your job. Ultimately it is your career and there is no use of you being stuck at a lower rung in the ladder when everyone else is making the effort and capitalising on the chances to move up. |
