Career change - is it worth it?by Vishnupreetham
Do you force yourself up everyday to get to work? Are you feeling listless and unenthusiastic? Do you keep hoping everyday for change? Well, you're certainly not alone. A lot of people look for a change, not just in jobs but even in their careers. Though this could hit you at any point of time, the transition needs a lot of preparation, which even includes a change in mindset. A career change is definitely a huge decision, especially when you plan for one after years of slogging it out in a particular field. However it is not impossible or inappropriate. You know your needs better than anybody else, so forcing yourself to stick around and accept what comes your way when you know for a fact that is not what you really want to do, can do you no good. You never know, you could be a roaring success in the field that you choose, so pull up your socks and work towards pursuing your brand new vocation. Most people assume that changing careers entails a complete change from what they've been doing all along. Yes, this can be true in some cases. I remember meeting a lawyer who after more than ten years of practice decided to become a writer. He shut shop one fine day to look for jobs in writing. A drastic step some might feel, but the fact is he managed to do quite well for himself and last heard had received a huge commission to write a book on his earlier profession. I do agree that not all get that lucky, but you cannot really assume you won't go anywhere in your new career. The first thing that worries anyone who opts for a shift is the remuneration. After getting used to a particular lifestyle there are bound to be worries about starting over from scratch. This is when you will have to keep in mind that a change in career does not always mean starting from the beginning. Unless you plan to make a drastic shift, most often than not people only choose to shift their job role when they opt for a change. Take for instance the countless software professionals who after years of spearheading software innovations have moved over to train new recruits to do the same. From software innovations to training is not something new, it just needs a shift in focus and goals. So if you think you want to try something new, make sure you do some ground work before you take the plunge. To start off with you could if possible take the advice from someone in the human resource department in your firm about the different job roles, not necessarily ones that relate to your field of expertise. If you find something that might interest you, find what that role entails and how you can get there from where you are now. Do some research and see if you will have to broaden your expertise a little bit more for the change and work towards it. However do not be disheartened if your company does not wish to shift you from your present position. Most organisations prefer a fresh new recruit to internal transfers, because it is often believed that new people add in a new perspective. Possibly true but that should not deter you from your decision. If you cannot be transferred internally you can always opt to find your ideal role at a different organisation. On the other hand if it is a long pursued hobby that you plan to make your full-time career, make sure you've gathered enough information about how and where to start off. Remember that when you like doing something it shouldn't be very difficult to make a success out of it. It is your passion that can make a whole lot of a difference. Yes, it will not be an easy task, but it is definitely not impossible to make it a success. Just ensure that you're adequately cushioned financially to venture out. No business starts making money immediately, so identify your prospects and gauge how you can start earning as soon as you open shop. Though getting to your comfort zone financially could take some time, do not be disheartened if you're not moving ahead as you'd expected. Every new venture or a shift would take its time, so try to get acclimatized as soon as possible and you'd be surprised to see how successes follow you as soon as you really settle in. |
