Body language goof-ups that can ruin your interview

  • Weak Handshake

You enter; you look confident, you greet the interviewer and then shake hands limply. The minute you do that you might as well leave. A limp handshake will instantaneously tell the interview you're not really that confident nor in command. A firm, non-sweaty handshake always makes an instant connection, remember that!
  • Not smiling

Some may wonder why this is so important, but a smile helps to break the ice and put both parties at ease. Keeping a grim face can shut the door on cordiality and you can rest assured that no interviewer will ever make the first move towards relaxed, pleasant conversation, if the candidate has no inclination to.
  • No eye contact

This is a common problem. Not only does it make you come across as an insecure person, but it can also make the interview feel ill at ease wondering if something is wrong with him/her that the candidate is refusing to look back straight in the eye.
  • Twitching away

It is your interview, you are bound to feel nervous, but that is no excuse for constantly fidgeting. Do that and you will be branded as a restless, anxious wreck!
  • Slouch

Bad posture gives the impression of a lazy person. No one wants to hire a couch potato, so make sure you sit erect and look confident.
  • Crossing your arms over your chest

A sign of overconfidence, crossing your arms and sitting back would most definitely make the interviewer assume that you think a tad bit too much about yourself. No superior will ever consider hiring a bigheaded know-it-all, so make extra sure you don't come across as one.
  • Hairy tales

Your hair will remain on your head; you do not have to keep checking on it every few seconds. Keep playing with it, twirling it and you sure will have no offer in hand. If your hair-cut makes it fall over your face, then tie it back or use hair gel to make sure your hand doesn't go to it every few minutes during the interview.
  • Touching your face

Intermittently touching your face can send out mixed signals to the interviewer. You could either seem to be wiping something off or hinting that the interviewer should do the same. Whatever it may be, don't ever keep touching yourself as it can also be misconstrued as being suggestive.
  • Using too many hand gestures

Your mouth is obviously doing the talking; there is no need to let your hands join in too. Keep your hands to yourself, as mush as possible, unless there is a genuine need to have it moving about.
