Beat the Blues

Everyone feels burnt-out at some point of time in their lives. But what's more common nowadays is the cause. With work becoming more and more demanding people are getting more stressed-out by the day, which is proclaimed to be very unhealthy. But how many of us are really listening to health experts advising us to take it easy. Studies now show that the more stressed-out people become the shorter their life-span gets. But are we listening? We're often so caught up in the thick of things, meeting deadlines, juggling roles and responsibilities that it seems rather impossible to find the time to de-stress. However there is hope for us all, beating stress doesn't need specifically allocated time, it just calls for a little bit of effort and kaput you'll be all set to take on the world with renewed vigor. Here are some tips that I was given to de-stress, hope they're handy.

Laughter therapy
Well, we've heard this one a million times but don't usually consider it important enough to apply. A scientifically proven fact, laughter sets off chemical reactions in the human body that in turn releases endorphins, natural tranquilisers and even relieves pain. So if you're feeling really depressed, laugh or at the very least smile. Because the instant you smile you're bound to feel less depressed.

Control your anger
When things don't seem to go your way and you have too many things to deal with, it can be difficult to not be angry. But continuing to be angry cannot solve your problems nor get things done sooner. Everyone knows that so how do you stop feeling angry? You can take a walk, get away from the person or place that is making you angry, clear your thoughts and then get back to work. A lot of times when we are angry we end up saying things that we will regret and later fret about it and the consequences of the outburst, which will only add to the stress. So the next time you're angry, take a deep breath, though it may seem impossible, count to ten and try not to hold any grudges.

Take a visual vacation
Work keeping you stuck in one place? Everyone has an access to the Internet nowadays so taking a virtual tour shouldn't be difficult. Though it could make you sad that you cannot go, when you're actually looking at pictures of places worth visiting you're bound to let you mind wander and it sure will make you happy. On the other hand if you don't want to take a virtual vacation, think about the happiest one you'd taken and relive those happy moments, it will definitely bring a smile to your lips.

Bond with people
Findings say that people who do not socialise much die prematurely. That I expect will make anyone start connecting with people. It actually would be better if you do, since the best way to de-stress is to make sure to spend time with your family and friends as regularly as possible. And when at work, start boding with your co-workers, after all you spend most part of your day with them, so sharing a good rapport with colleagues will not only make things smoother at work but will also ensure you have a few good laughs once in a while.

Knock-out negativity
All of us gossip and nitpick at work. Though the frequency may vary and though gossip up to a certain limit is proven to be healthy, negative thoughts can never really be good in the long run. And if you stop and pay closer attention, you'd find that all of us spend our work time complaining most of the time. Negativity can do no good, so every time you think of something negative, start seeing the positive side of the situation too. Or better still, laugh off the negativity and you'll see how much relief that gives you.

Create a play, relaxation zone
If your organisation already has a gym or a play area with indoor sports, make sure you make use of it at least few times a week. Playing a sport is the best way to de-stress and if you're provided with the facility at work, why not make good use of it. However if you don't have access to one, volunteer to get one or see if you can pool in some money and get something that you can stock-up. It can be something as small as a board game or even caroms, which you can play during lunch breaks. Another option is to allocate an area that lets you relax; it could just have comfortable couches, or be an airy corner that shuts out the humdrum of activities. Spending time away from your cubicle for some time will not only help you realign your thoughts but also help you really relax, which you will have to do to avoid getting stressed-out

There are lots more that you can do, from going out after work, taking a walk every day during breaks to decorating your desk for creating a friendlier ambience. Whatever you may choose to do, make sure you do it, because at the end of the day beating stress is a necessity for a healthier life. With more experience, responsibilities are bound to increase but so does stress, since multi-tasking and meeting deadlines become all the more important. So make sure you do your bit everyday to de-stress, so that you not only look forward to working but most importantly lead a happier life.
