Tips to Cordially Reject a Salary Offer

Tips to Cordially Reject a Salary Offer

A lot of times people back out of an offer at the last minute due to various reasons. However most often than not it always turns out to be the salary that you've been offered that makes you reject an offer. Because the minute you're on the look out and start receiving offers for employment, you will realize that there are chances of you to get paid different salaries for the same position in different organization. And in a competitive market anyone would choose the offer with the fatter paycheck than the one that pays lesser. But how do you reject an offer without ruffling a few feathers? Given below are a few tips that you should definitely consider before you go about on your rejecting spree. After all you in life and in a bad market you never really know when you might have to go back to the rejected prospective employer!

Not good enough? Reject promptly, never accept and then reject!

As soon as an offer is made you would certainly know if that is what you're looking at. If an offer does not in any way match your own expectations then do not make the mistake of accepting it and then deciding to call back and rejecting. Because the minute a candidate accepts an offer every organization would close their hiring for that position making it impossible for them to go back again and start the procedure all over again, since it can create a negative impact in the market. Hence if you really think that the package is not attractive enough and there are absolutely no chances for it to be revised then conduct yourself professionally and be forthright in your rejection.

Being Prompt Pays

There is a very thin line between genuinely considering an offer and just dilly-dallying with response. Unfortunately a lot of people do not really realize this and keep taking their own sweet time considering other options though they know that they have no intention of going back and accepting what is on offer. In an interview you would obviously have touched upon the topic of salary and found out what exactly the employer is ready to give. And in a lot of organizations today the meeting with the human resources department happens a little later, sometimes even after a few days that invariably gives you ample time to weigh options. Therefore as soon as you've learnt from your prospective team head what to expect, do some honest evaluations and then take a decision. And then if you've realized that what's on offer is not really worth pursuing then do not under any circumstance waste an employer's time by delaying the response. Moreover your careful considerations will certainly help you to move on easily without any second thoughts.

Write In Your Rejection

Yes you've decided to let go and have also called in and informed, but what next? Well if you really wish to follow protocol then it is recommended that you write in your rejection too. Since not only can it ensure that it is amicable but it would also give you a chance to soften things up. However you should also make sure that you do not go about giving a graphical description of why you would prefer not to accept and what you felt was not enough. There could be several reasons like another more lucrative offer too, so ensure that you word your rejection well, make it as neutral as possible and leave it open that even though it did not work out this time you would definitely be interested if something else that matches your criteria comes up in the future.

Ensure Its Well Written

What you write is a reflection of you, your ideals and your attitude. So make sure that you pay careful attention to what is being sent out and carefully eliminate common communication errors. Like in speech, writing has its own rules too so ensure that your email follows etiquette and is professionally sound and good. Always maintain high standards and let your written response be an impressive reflection of who you are.

Don't Sever Ties Irreparably

Whatever may be your reason for declining an offer, just remember that it is never really good to burn bridges completely. In the end you never know when you might hope to be considered by the same organization later. And even if you do not go back to the same organization for a job chances are that you might meet the people employed there currently somewhere else when it could become crucial for you to ensure that you have a good working relationship. Taking all this into consideration always make sure that when you decide to decline you make it as amicable as possible. Since a lot of times people end up talking about it, which can ruin not just your reputation in the market but could also cost you opportunities in the future.
